Back in the Pool!

by hammonjj

After several weeks of not being able to swim post surgery, I finally got back in the pool today and did a solid 1200m.  I decided to keep the workout short so I wouldn’t overdo it on the wrist, but I wasn’t in the slightest bit of pain the entire time. Yeah!  Also, I didn’t realize how much the cast was holding me back.  I got in the pool and was easily keeping 1:40/100m pace and didn’t have any problem kicking up to 1:20/100m.  Mind you, before, I was averaging closer to 1:50-2:00 comfortably.  Man, fiberglass sucks!  Still a crappy swimmer, but at least there is hope now.  I’m hoping I can get down to a 1:30 before the Boulder Tri, but we’ll see how that goes, I’m a little short on time for that.

On the bike front, all is good.  I spent the week doing four separate threshold sessions (2×20) and felt stronger with each passing interval.  On Tuesday I’ll do another threshold test and I suspect that I will see a nice gain from it.  I’ll shoot for 8 more watts, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I can get 10.  Running wasn’t so good this week.  I must have overdone the mileage and intensity last week as I had an issue with my ankles being sore for most of the week.  I think, going forward, I’m going to ditch my long run during the week and just let my track run and a tempo run substitute for it.  My goals for the season are short; all are sprint triathlons, so I don’t really see a need to go too crazy with volume when what I really need is speed.

School starts again tomorrow, so it’s back to the normal grind.  As always, thanks for reading!
